Unusual Shield Mounted Capercaillie Taxidermy with tail feathers

The capercaillie is a huge woodland grouse, the large black males are unmistakable. They spend a lot of time feeding on the ground, but may also be found in trees, feeding on shoots and buds. They are a localised breeding species found in Scottish native pinewood, a rare and vulnerable habitat, and in commercial conifer plantations. The capercaillie is a heavy member of the grouse family and the largest of all extant grouse species. This primarily-ground-dwelling forest grouse is renowned for its courtship display. This bird shows extreme sexual dimorphism, with males nearly twice the size of females. The word capercaillie is a corruption of the Scottish gaelic capall coille “Horse of the wood”.
